Different Barfi Recipes to Try at Home


Traditional Indian delicacies are incomplete without the mention of barfi. It is that one versatile sweet indulgence that can be prepared in a variety of flavours, shapes and colors and using exciting ingredients.

Here are a few quick and easy barfi recipes to try at home –

Papaya Badam Barfi

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ripe papaya (chopped)
  • 3 tbsp. almond powder
  • ½ cup mawa/khoya
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp. ghee
  • ½ tsp. cardamom powder
  • Pinch of saffron strands
  • 1-2 drops of rose essence

Procedure

  • Heat the ghee in a heavy bottom pan and add papaya to it. Cook it for 4-5 minutes while stirring it occasionally
  • To this, add the almond powder and cardamom powder and allow it to cook for another 3-4 minutes
  • While stirring, add the mawa, saffron and rose essence to it and mix it well. Allow it to simmer for 5-6 minutes, until the mawa combines with the entire mixture
  • After this, add the sugar and keep stirring the mixture on high flame. Cook it till the mixture becomes soft and thick
  • Grease a setting tray and add the mixture into it. Spread it across evenly and refrigerate it

Cut it into small pieces and garnish it with saffron strands

Nachni Barfi

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup nachni/ragi flour
  • ½ cup grated jaggery
  • ½ cup mawa/khoya
  • 2 tbsp. ghee
  • 2 tbsp. sliced almonds
  • 3 tbsp. peanut butter

Procedure

  • Heat the ghee in a heavy bottom pan, add the almonds and nachni flour and roast it for 10-12 minutes
  • To this, add jaggery and cook it till it melts completely
  • Then add mawa and peanut butter to it and keep stirring till its blended completely
  • Grease a setting tray and add this mixture into it. Spread it across evenly and refrigerate it
  • Cut it into small pieces and garnish it with chocolate shavings

Gajar Barfi

Ingredients

  • 3 cups grated carrots
  • ¾ cup milk powder
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp. green cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp. ghee
  • 8-10 unsalted assorted nuts

Procedure

  • Heat the ghee in a heavy bottom pan and add carrots to it. Cook it for 10-12 minutes
  • To this, add the milk powder in small proportions and mix it well. Cook this mixture for another 3-4 minutes
  • Then add the sugar and green cardamom powder and mix it well. Allow it to cook until the sugar melts completely and the mixture looks slightly greasy
  • Once the mixture thickens, add the nuts to it and mix it thoroughly
  • Grease a setting tray and add the mixture into it. Spread it across evenly and refrigerate it
  • Cut it into small pieces and garnish it with some sliced unsalted pistachio nuts
